WHO IS
I’m Laura, a Hobart-born Melbourne-based copywriter, MC and performer. There’s much more to me, though! How did I become a Jack of all trades, Master of Ceremonies?
Let’s rewind. I spent my childhood participating in any hobby I could fit in before my 7:30pm bedtime (after Home and Away): soccer, swimming, athletics, dancing, singing, piano, French horn, bass recorder (as if a regular recorder wasn’t bad enough), and horse riding (living out my Saddle Club dreams).
As a teen, I zeroed in on performing, although I still had to survive school, where I was just as obsessed with writing and reading as I was with singing, dancing, and acting. I fell in love with anything that allowed me to express myself.
I moved across the Bass Strait to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Music Theatre) at Federation University. After my degree, I ventured to Melbourne and, just like when I was a kid, juggled a plethora of jobs: teaching acting and singing, dog walking, waitressing, taking music sessions at childcare centres, and hosting trivia. And before you ask, yes, I somehow worked these jobs at the same time, on top of auditioning for everything I could.
During COVID, I had a bit of a career crisis, a tale as old as time, isn’t it? When the world started opening back up, I had a rush of sheer panic, realising I didn’t want to go back to my pre-pandemic life. So began the journey of “setting Laura up for a life she actually wants to live.” I enrolled in RMIT’s professional writing and editing course because, while I was crazy enough to dream of a livable wage and some financial stability, I still wanted to be creative. The course at RMIT is so broad, and I got to dip my toes into various writing and editing avenues, ultimately falling in love with creative non-fiction and, you guessed it, copywriting!
And just like in a classic rom-com, copywriting was my unexpected love story. You know the one, the protagonist is all set on their path, thinking they know exactly what they want, when out of nowhere, a charming, low-key love interest comes along and turns everything upside down. For me, copywriting was that surprise twist. At first, I thought it was just a fling, a way to support my true passion for the arts. But the more time I spent with it, the more I realised it was so much more than just a side gig.
Of course, my love for MC'ing and performing will always be a huge part of who I am. There's nothing like the thrill of hyping up a crowd or bringing a story to life on stage. But copywriting? That’s where I found another kind of magic. It turns out that the art of storytelling doesn’t just belong on the stage, it’s alive and kicking in the world of words, too. Now, I get to blend my love for performance with the power of language, creating copy that’s as punchy and dynamic as a Shakespeare sonnet.
